Obituary for Aquila Esther Lee (Nickell)

Aquila Esther Lee, 95, passed away early Friday morning, April 23, 2021 at Satanta Long Term Care. She was born February 22, 1926 to Robbie Lee (Cox) and Herbert Clyde Nickell in Allen, Oklahoma. She married Charles “Short” Lee on April 25th, 1951 in Coalgate, Oklahoma.

Aquila fed countless students while working as a cook at the Sublette schools. She retired as head cook at Sublette High School in 1991. A few generations of students have mouth-watering memories of Aquila's delicious homemade cinnamon rolls. Known for those infamous rolls and for her caramels, she was equally known for the joy and humor she brought to every room she entered. During her quiet time Aquila enjoyed knitting and crocheting for her family and friends. Aquila was challenged by word search puzzles and was an avid KU basketball fan. She worked hard and was determined to take care of her own needs; so, when she needed new siding on her house after she retired, she started cleaning the credit union and the Pride of Life building to pay for it. Her motto was “Hope for the best & cope with the rest.”

She began attending the Sublette Church of the Nazarene in 1964 and was active in the congregation until she moved to Satanta Long Term Care.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Karen Lee; grandsons, Shanen Copeland and wife, Angela, of Safford, AZ, and Andy Lee of Sublette, KS; granddaughters, Laurie Copeland Cochran and husband, Michael, of LaCrosse, KS, and Tami Mateljan of York, PA; thirteen great grandchildren; fifteen great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald Nickell of Johnson, KS; a sister, Ruby Dean Walker of Arlington, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Short” Lee; beloved son, Charlie Lee; her parents, Robbie and Clyde Nickell; brothers, Arthur, Arvil, Estle, Leldon, Oral, L. D., and Paul Nickell; sisters, Zelma Prewitt, Johnnie Palmer, Priscilla Guinn, and baby Jewell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at the Weeks Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Sublette, Kansas.

Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 30, 2021 at Sublette Church of the Nazarene with interment at the Haskell County Cemetery following the service.
